As an athlete, there is no substitute for hard work. You can’t just show up at the gym or on the field and expect to get results without putting in the effort. But there are a few lifestyle changes you can implement to become better at your sport, and they don’t require that much time or effort. Here are six ways to become a better athlete.

Get enough sleep

If you’re trying to improve your athletic performance, you should aim for 8 hours of sleep or more each night. Sleep is essential for recovery from exercise and injury. It gives your body time to repair tissue damage and replenish energy stores after training or competing in a game or match. It also helps with memory consolidation.

Eat right

Diet is an important part of any athlete’s training regimen that can have a huge impact on performance. It is highly personal, but remember to try out lots of different styles of eating and stick to one that suits you. Protein, carbohydrates, non-saturated fats and vitamins are all essential to bulk up on.

Work out hard

Once you have a solid foundation in the basics, work on your endurance. There are many ways to do this, but the best way is through personal training for athletes. This means getting out of your comfort zone and putting yourself under pressure so that your body will grow stronger. You want to make sure not to overtrain though! Train hard for a few weeks, then take a few days off before starting again.

Visualise goals

Similar to the power of positive thinking, visualising your goals can help you achieve them. Dreaming of your success can allow you to stay motivated and focused on the task at hand. For example, when it is time for a match, imagine yourself making all the perfect shots and winning the game. Doing this reinforces that working hard will pay off.

Chat to your fellow players

A true winner knows to value the advice of others. Approach people who are better than you and ask them for advice. You will discover how much effort and improvement you require in order to get better at something. Similarly, you should also talk to people who you beat in matches. This might seem counter-intuitive, but these players might have some incredible words of advice you had previously never considered.

Train hard, play easy

Train hard, play easy. This is the mantra of many current and former athletes, and it’s applicable to almost any sport. The idea is that you should make sure you are training hard in your practice sessions—but also focus on having fun when playing.
