To keep your muscles healthy and in good shape, you need to do exercises and stretches that focus on flexibility. Sitting for lengthy periods of time or doing little physical activity can cause limited muscle flexibility. But it’s never too late to become more flexible. By adding some simple stretching techniques into your daily routine, you can also improve your physical well-being and offset the impacts of ageing on your body. Read on to learn some of the best stretches and exercises to increase flexibility.

Perform the low lunge twist stretch

Start in a low lunge position with your left foot between your hands and your right leg extended backwards. Then, draw your left hand over your head, toward the ceiling while rotating your waste to look up at it. Inhale and exhale a few times before returning to the low lunge position. Once you’ve repeated on the other side, you’ve done one rep. We suggest doing between three to five reps.

Do the cat-cow stretch

Come on to the floor with all fours, knees under your hips and hands directly under your shoulders. Inhale and arch your spine so that your tailbone lifts upwards, and your belly sinks down. Exhale and push into your knees and hands to hollow your stomach, round your spine and tuck your chin towards your chest. We suggest doing between three to five reps.

Attend a yoga class
Yoga allows you to reduce stress by using meditation, breath control and bodily postures. Not only does it enhance your flexibility and balance, but yoga also helps you feel more mentally focused or stronger. When doing yoga, you can focus on stretching several areas of your body at once, or you can target areas like your back, hips and shoulders. Even taking a beginner’s class once or twice a week will help reduce the tension and stretch your muscles.
End your workout with a foam roller
Using a foam roller can help improve your performance, function, and flexibility, as well as remove lactic acid from your muscles faster, which can help you recover post-workout a lot quicker. A foam roller is a self-massage technique that allows you to ‘roll out’ your muscles via your body weight to relieve tension. This can help relieve soreness, inflammation, and muscle tightness.
